YEAR 5

Dear Parents and Students,

This term has been very busy and some year 5’s have shown some big improvements academically.

In English our focus was on nouns and their proper usage, we continued with a spelling mastery program learning new rules to assist with spelling. Students expanded their narrative storytelling skills from last year to add additional information to their story writing. We have also focussed on reading comprehension and as a class this is a skill we will need to keep working on, really understanding what we read and being able to summarise it in our own words. We have been reading John Marsdens Staying Alive in Year 5 and summarising, discussing and questioning each chapter.

In Maths, we have been challenged with Elementary Maths Mastery. The class must listen to Maths questions on a variety of topics and answer them. New topics covered have been: how to get the average; how to take data from a table and use it. For shapes, we learnt new names for the 4 types of triangles; equilateral, scalene, isosceles, right angled. We also learnt what makes a shape a polygon and how to classify them as regular or irregular. Our most recent topic is equivalent fractions and how to add and subtract fractions. Students need to remember only to add or subtract the numerator and not the denominator.

In Art, the students learnt about foreshortening and 1 point perspective and they made some impressive work. For Drama, students took a Dreamtime story, interpreted the story into a play script and acted it out in small groups. For Music, the term project was choosing a story book and trying different rap techniques to then use in a performance in front of the class. All students then bravely performed their rap for the class.

A reminder that all students’ test scores, reports and home messages are available via SEQTA Engage (for parents) and SEQTA Learn (for students), and that all parents should be monitoring this.

Enjoy the Holiday
